A Second World War campaign group of five medals, swing mounted as worn, comprising:
1939–45 Star
Africa Star with clasp “1st Army”
Italy Star
Defence Medal
War Medal 1939–45
This group represents operational service in the Mediterranean theatre during the later stages of the North African campaign, followed by participation in the Italian campaign.
The Africa Star with clasp “1st Army” denotes service with the British First Army, the formation that fought during the final phase of the North African campaign in Tunisia between November 1942 and May 1943, following the Allied landings in North Africa during Operation Torch. The First Army engaged German and Italian forces in a series of hard-fought battles across Tunisia culminating in the surrender of Axis forces in May 1943.
Qualification for the Italy Star indicates subsequent service in the Italian campaign from 1943 onwards, when Allied forces invaded Sicily and mainland Italy and fought a prolonged series of battles against German defensive positions as they advanced northwards up the Italian peninsula.
The group is swing mounted as worn, presenting well as a representative campaign group covering two major Mediterranean theatres of the war.
Condition: Good overall condition.
A well-presented Second World War campaign group reflecting service in both the North African and Italian theatres.
