French Médaille Militaire – First World War Period, in Original Box

A First World War period French Médaille Militaire, presented here in its original issue box. Instituted in 1852, the Médaille Militaire is one of France’s highest awards for non-commissioned officers and enlisted ranks, ranking immediately below the Légion d’Honneur and often regarded as its equivalent for other ranks.

During the First World War, the Médaille Militaire was awarded for exceptional bravery in the field, distinguished leadership, or outstanding service under fire. It was frequently bestowed upon senior NCOs and soldiers who had already been cited for gallantry, as well as posthumously to those killed in action.

The medal features the effigy of the French Republic (Marianne) on the obverse, surrounded by the inscription “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE”, with the reverse bearing the traditional laurel wreath and legend “VALEUR ET DISCIPLINE”. It is suspended from its correct yellow ribbon with green edge stripes, emblematic of the award.

Housed in its original fitted box, this example presents as an attractive and complete period piece, showing expected age-related wear consistent with a genuine First World War award.

A highly respected and historically significant French gallantry decoration, made especially desirable by the presence of the original box and its clear Great War provenance.
