WW1 British Pair - 2878 Pte. W. Paterson - Royal Scots
William Paterson
From Bourtie, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire
Was working for Lord MacKenzie, a Supreme Court judge Edinburgh when he enlisted into the 5th Bn Royal Scots, 3rd Dec 1914
Did not go to Gallipoli, joined Battalion as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force 21st January 1916
Served with MEF for 3 months before the Battalion moved to France and Flanders 15th March 1916
Private William Paterson was Wounded in Action during a Bombing Raid on the 15th September 1916, he died of wounds the next day
From the war diary “ On the evening/morning 15/16 September a bombing party under Captain McLeod undertook a trench raid. This is successful but 5 of the party are wounded and taken away to 91 Field Ambulance, 2 died later of their wounds”
William is buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension
His younger brother S/14423 Pte Michael Paterson of 1st Bn Gordon Highlanders was K.I.A 13/07/1917.
