United States Purple Heart Medal
(Lordship NY-GI Issue, c.1990–1996)
The Purple Heart is one of the most respected decorations awarded by the armed forces of the United States, presented to service personnel who have been wounded or killed as a direct result of enemy action.
This example represents an un-named and un-attributed issue of the 1990–1996 period, as awarded to wounded veterans and to the next of kin of those killed in action during late Cold War and post–Cold War operations. Purple Hearts of this era are associated with conflicts and interventions including the Gulf War, Operation Just Cause (Panama), Somalia, Haiti, and the Balkan conflicts.
The medal is struck in gilt-finished bronze, featuring the profile bust of George Washington on a purple enamelled heart, surmounted by the Washington family coat of arms. The reverse bears the raised inscription “FOR MILITARY MERIT”, with the field left plain, as issued.
The ribbon is fitted to the correct 9mm crimp brooch mounting bar, retaining its original drop-lock fitting with long-hinged pin and clasp, exactly as issued. The brooch is stamped with the Federal Government contractor’s hallmark “LORDSHIP NY-GI”, identifying manufacture by Lordship Industries of New York, for many years the principal supplier of United States military medals and insignia.
In 1996, the United States Government cancelled all Federal contracts held by Lordship Industries, bringing an end to the company’s long-standing role as a major supplier to the armed forces.
A highly evocative and historically significant combat award, representing personal sacrifice during modern United States military operations and desirable for its Lordship NY-GI manufacture and correct period issue.
