British War Medal – 19774 PTE. G. HEADLAM. SEA. HIGHRS.

Victory Medal – 19774 PTE. G. HEADLAM. SEA. HIGHRS.

Private George Corner Headlam was born on 24 March 1888 at Whitby, Yorkshire, the son of Robert Sample Headlam and Jane Corner. He was baptised at St Ninian’s Chapel of Ease, Whitby, on 31 March 1888. He grew up in Whitby and appears in the 1891 and 1901 Census returns with his family. By the 1911 Census, aged 23, he was living at Tyermans Yard, Whitby, and employed as a House Painter, unmarried.

Following the outbreak of the Great War he enlisted at Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. He initially served as No. 26589, Yorkshire Regiment, before transferring to the Labour Corps, where he was allocated No. 8038. He later served as No. 19774, 3rd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. His service was in the Western European Theatre, and he remained in France during the final months of the war.

He died on 6 November 1918, just five days before the Armistice, aged 30 years. His death is recorded in “Soldiers Died in the Great War” as occurring in France and Flanders. He is buried in Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France (Grave II.E.22).

His Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone records him as the son of Mrs Jane Headlam, of 7 Tyerman Yard, New Quay, Whitby, Yorkshire, and bears the inscription: “Even Christ pleased not himself. R.I.P.”

He was among the many men who survived almost the entirety of the war, only to lose his life in its closing days.
