Thomas McCallum Cameron, service number 33090, served with the 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). Born in Bishopton, Renfrewshire, in 1897, he was the son of Archibald Cameron and lived at 8 Alma Street, Govan, Glasgow. He enlisted in Glasgow and joined the 10th Cameronians, a New Army battalion of the 15th (Scottish) Division.
By the summer of 1917 the battalion was heavily engaged during the opening stages of the Third Battle of Ypres. Cameron was wounded during this period and evacuated through the casualty-clearing chain to Lijssenthoek, the major medical hub behind the Ypres front. Despite treatment, he died of wounds on 30 July 1917, aged only 20.
He is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium, one of the largest Commonwealth cemeteries on the Western Front, and is commemorated there at Plot XVI, Row K, Grave 13. Pension records show his dependant was his step-mother, Mrs Elizabeth Cameron, of the family home in Govan.
A young Glaswegian soldier who fell during the opening phase of Passchendaele and now lies among the thousands treated and buried at Lijssenthoek.
