Together with the slip that accompanied the medals and the fitted case for the Imperial Service Medal.
Alfred George Crockford was the youngest child of Alfred Charles Crockford, a postman, and his wife Emma. He had two older sisters. He was born on 22 August 1898 in Richmond Surrey England, and in November of that year was christened in Christchurch Richmond.
In 1911 when Alfred was still at school his father still worked as a postman and his eldest sister, Lilian worked in the Telephone Office. However there is no evidence that Alfred himself ever joined the postal service.
Alfred Crockford enlisted in the Royal Engineers in Kingston Surrey as a Pioneer. This would have been in August 1916, when he became 18 years old. His Regimental number was 267787. He could not serve abroad until he was 19 years old so should not have left the UK until after August 1917. In German East Africa he was posted to the Base Signal Depot
Pioneer Crockford died of Malaria on 29 December 1917, aged 19 years and 4 months. He was buried in the cemetery of Mtama in German East Africa with the grave marker I J 2. In the 1970s the new Dar es Salaam War Cemetery brought in graves from all over Tanzania where maintenance could no longer be assured. Pioneer Crockford was reburied in Dar es Salaam with the Grave Reference 6 F 2.
