Arthur Frederick Tisbury was born on 27 April 1913 at Cheshunt, Middlesex, the son of Arthur William J. Tisbury and Annie Phoebe Tisbury (née Jaggers). He grew up in the Cheshunt area alongside several siblings and married Hilda Gladys Christina (Norah) Dedman in 1932. The couple later had two sons, one of whom died in infancy. Prior to and after the war, Tisbury remained closely associated with Hertfordshire and Middlesex.
During the Second World War, Tisbury served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), the corps responsible for the repair, recovery and maintenance of the Army’s increasingly complex mechanical and electrical equipment. He rose to the rank of Corporal, service number 2041300, and served in the Western Europe theatre during the final phases of the campaign.
On 1 May 1945, in the closing days of the war in Europe, Corporal Tisbury was wounded in action, an event recorded on the British Army Casualty Lists for the period 14 May to 6 June 1945. His wounding occurred during the final operations as Allied forces advanced into Germany, underlining that his service continued right through to the end of hostilities.
Following the war, Arthur Tisbury remained connected with the Territorial Army, and in 1947 he was awarded the Territorial Efficiency Medal, recognising long and efficient service. He continued civilian life after demobilisation and died on 14 July 1973 at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, aged 60.
A solid and well-documented example of late-war REME service, combining operational deployment in North West Europe, a recorded wounding in action, and recognised post-war Territorial commitment.
