British General Service Medal - Private Wood, Royal Army Medical Corps

General Service Medal, clasp 'Palestine 1945-48' - 14131112 PTE. J. WOOD. R.A.M.C.

Private J. Wood, service number 14131112, later 22546421, served with the 9th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, qualifying for the General Service Medal with clasp ‘PALESTINE 1945–48’ for his service between 27 June 1946 and 5 October 1947, as confirmed on the Order of Battle.

The clasp Palestine 1945–48 was awarded for service during the final, turbulent years of the British Mandate. This period saw increasing unrest, insurgency, and political violence as Britain struggled to maintain order between Jewish and Arab communities in the aftermath of the Second World War. British troops undertook security operations, patrolling, protection of key infrastructure, curfew enforcement, and responses to bombings, ambushes, and civil disorder.

The 9th Field Ambulance, R.A.M.C., provided essential frontline medical support throughout the campaign—treating casualties from explosions, shootings, rioting, and security duties, while also maintaining mobile medical posts and evacuation chains wherever units were deployed. The RAMC’s role in Palestine was often demanding, with medical personnel frequently operating under threat in urban areas such as Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Haifa, as well as in remote rural districts.
