Royal Air Force Long Service and Good Conduct Medal - 619231 SGT. F. GREENWOOD R.A.F.

A rare and highly desirable combination of campaign stars and long service award to Sergeant Fred Greenwood, Royal Air Force, whose service spanned the pre-war, wartime, and post-war eras. Greenwood enlisted as a civilian and formally joined the RAF as an Aircraftman after March 1938, later qualifying as a Flight Mechanic. He was subsequently appointed to the Class F Reserve, confirming ongoing obligations after his regular service.

By 1 April 1940, Greenwood is recorded serving with No. 36 Squadron, then based at Seletar, Singapore, a unit operating Vickers Vildebeest and later torpedo-bomber aircraft. The Operations Record Book notes his reclassification as an Aircraftman 1st Class with effect from that date. 36 Squadron was one of the RAF’s main strike units in the Far East, conducting maritime patrols, anti-shipping reconnaissance, and coastal defence duties in the tense months leading up to the Japanese assault on British possessions.

Greenwood later saw operational service that qualified him for the Pacific Star, indicating continued service in the theatre during the Malayan campaign, the defence of Singapore, or the wider operations in the Dutch East Indies arc as the empire reeled under Japanese attack.

In addition to his Far East service, Greenwood also earned the France & Germany Star, confirming subsequent operational service in the European theatre. This dual-theatre entitlement marks him out as a man who served in two of the key operational zones of the war—a rare distinction that explains the unusual and appealing combination of medals.

Post-war, Sgt. Greenwood remained with the RAF and completed the long, unblemished service required for the award of the Royal Air Force Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, naming him as 619231 Sergeant F. Greenwood, RAF.

A scarce and attractive group to a Flight Mechanic who served in both the Pacific and Northwest Europe campaigns—a combination seldom encountered and highly sought after.
