Second World War Air Crew Europe Star
The Air Crew Europe Star was awarded to members of the Royal Air Force and Allied air forces for operational flying over Europe between 3rd September 1939 and 5th June 1944 during the Second World War.
The medal is a six-pointed bronze star, bearing the crowned cipher of King George VI on the obverse with the inscription “THE AIR CREW EUROPE STAR”. The reverse is plain, as issued. It is fitted with its distinctive ribbon of light blue, black and pale blue, symbolising the night sky and RAF operations conducted over enemy-occupied Europe.
To qualify, aircrew were required to complete at least two months of operational flying over Europe. The award was primarily associated with personnel serving with RAF Bomber Command and Coastal Command, as well as aircrew engaged in reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, and other hazardous missions across occupied Europe and the North Atlantic approaches.
Following the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6th June 1944, qualification for this star ceased, and subsequent operational flying in the European theatre counted towards the France and Germany Star.
A classic and historically significant Second World War campaign star, closely associated with the dangerous operational service of RAF aircrew during the air war over Europe.
