Alfred Walter Vick was born in Southampton, Hampshire, around 1871–72, the son of George and Eliza Vick of Millbrook. In the 1891 Census, aged 19, he was recorded living with his parents in Shirley, Millbrook, Hampshire, and working locally.

By 1896 he had moved to the Channel Islands, marrying Temperance Paskins Gallichan on 11 July 1896 at St Saviour, Jersey. The couple had three children: Dorothy Temperance Elkins Vick (born 1897, St Helier), Thomas George Vick (born 1900, Southampton), and Alfred Charles Vick (born 1902, Southampton).

Vick’s maritime career progressed steadily. By 1907 he was recorded in the England, United Grand Lodge of England Freemason Membership Registers, initiated into the Prince of Wales Lodge No. 1003 in Jersey, where he was described as a Chief Steward living at 7 Shirley Road, Southampton.

In the 1911 Census, he appears as a Licensed Victualler, residing at 84 Crown and Archer PH, Commercial Road, Southampton. A decade later, in the 1921 Census, he was again based in Southampton, living at 132 Matonesbury Road, employed as a Ship’s Steward for the London & South Western Railway, working at Southampton Docks.

During the First World War, Alfred Walter Vick served in the Merchant Navy, qualifying for both the British War Medal and Mercantile Marine Medal, which are offered here together with his original correspondence of issue.

He died in Southampton in 1930, aged about 58, having lived his life in and around the city and the sea.
