John Tanner was born on 7 October 1885 at St Saviour, Southwark, London, the son of Thomas William Tanner and Sarah Elizabeth Hunt. Baptised the following year at Mile End Old Town St Peter, he grew up in London before settling in Edmonton, Middlesex.
In the 1911 Census, Tanner is recorded as a Sailor, aged 26, living with his parents and siblings at 39 St Joseph’s Road, Lower Edmonton. His seafaring career is confirmed by his Merchant Navy CR10 identity certificate (No. 402437), which records him as an Able Seaman born in London on 7 October 1885, with brown hair and eyes, standing 5ft 4in tall. His next of kin was his wife, Mrs A. Tanner, of 23 Lincoln Road, Ponders End.
Throughout the First World War, John Tanner served in the Mercantile Marine, earning both the British War Medal and Mercantile Marine Medal for his contribution to wartime service at sea. His CR10 card includes a rare original photograph of him in civilian attire.
He married Olive Rayner in 1912 at St Matthew’s Church, Edmonton, and they had one son, Leslie John Tanner, born in 1916. John Tanner remained resident in Edmonton for the rest of his life, appearing regularly on local electoral rolls through the 1940s and 1950s. He passed away in Edmonton, Middlesex, on 30 August 1962, aged 76.
