First World War Merchant Navy Medal Pair - 3rd Engineer Joshua Shepherd

British War Medal - JOSHUA SHEPHERD

Mercantile Marine Medal - JOSHUA SHEPHERD

Joshua Shepherd was born on 13 January 1885 at Wallsend, Northumberland, the son of Thomas and Mary Shepherd. The 1891 Census records him living with his family in Wallsend, where his father worked locally.

By 1911, Shepherd was married to Florence Ann Shepherd and residing at Clarence Street, Wellington Quay, Wallsend, working as a labourer for a marine engine fitter. His professional career progressed, and by the time of the First World War, he was serving as a 3rd Engineer in the Mercantile Marine, as confirmed by his CR10 identity card (No. 102653), which includes a photograph of him.

The card lists his place and date of birth as Wallsend, 13 January 1885, and confirms his British nationality. His service at sea during the Great War earned him both the British War Medal and the Mercantile Marine Medal.

In the 1921 Census, Shepherd is recorded living at 7 Lodge Terrace, Wallsend, employed as a Boiler Shop Craneman with the North Eastern Marine Engineering Company, a major shipbuilding and marine engine firm based in Wallsend.

A skilled marine engineer and lifelong resident of the Tyneside area, Joshua Shepherd represents the many civilian seafarers whose work was vital to Britain’s wartime maritime efforts.
