William Penderel Glover was born on 3 February 1918. Prior to the Second World War he was living at 10 Clark’s Hill, Prestwich, Manchester, and was employed as a bank clerk, as recorded in the 1939 Register.
He enlisted into the British Army and served with the Royal Army Service Corps under the service number S/136027, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. During the North African campaign he distinguished himself while serving as a Corporal, for which he was Mentioned in Despatches, an award published in the London Gazette on 23 September 1943. The group is accompanied by his original Mentioned in Despatches certificate.
Glover saw overseas service in North Africa and Italy, entitling him to the relevant campaign awards. He was also entitled to the 1st Army clasp for the Africa Star, although this clasp is absent from the group. His service continued through to the end of the war, and he was discharged in February 1946.
The medal group is accompanied by a quantity of original documentation relating to his service (see images), adding useful context and provenance to an impressive Second World War group awarded to a non-commissioned officer of the Royal Army Service Corps.
