Original 1900 Boer War Queen Victoria Christmas Chocolate Tin

A genuine Boer War chocolate tin issued as part of Queen Victoria’s Christmas gift to British troops serving in South Africa in 1900. These tins were sent to the men fighting in the Second Boer War and originally contained specially commissioned chocolate supplied by Fry’s, Rowntree’s or Cadbury.

Struck in gilt metal, the tin features the raised Royal monogram “VR”, the inscription “South Africa 1900”, and portraits of Queen Victoria to the corners—one of the most iconic and recognisable personal gifts sent to soldiers during the campaign. Millions were produced, but relatively few survive in good condition due to field use, storage, and the passage of more than a century.

This example shows the correct period construction and an appealing age patina. These tins are widely collected pieces of Boer War memorabilia, often displayed alongside medals or documents belonging to soldiers who served in the South African campaign.

A classic and historically significant Boer War item, ideal for collectors of Victorian military history or Anglo–Boer War memorabilia.
