Private A. Lambert served with the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) during the turbulent years immediately preceding and throughout the Second World War, seeing service both in the Middle East prior to the war and later in the North African campaign.

He first saw active service in Palestine, qualifying for the General Service Medal 1918–62 with clasp “Palestine”. This award recognised participation in the difficult internal security operations carried out by British forces during the Arab Revolt in Mandatory Palestine between 1936 and 1939, when units of the British Army were deployed to maintain order, protect infrastructure and suppress insurgent activity across the region.

Following the outbreak of the Second World War he continued his service with the Black Watch, serving overseas in the North African theatre. His entitlement to the Africa Star with clasp “8th Army” confirms service with the famous Eighth Army, the British-led field army that fought a long and hard campaign against German and Italian forces across Egypt and Libya, culminating in decisive victories such as the Second Battle of El Alamein in 1942 and the subsequent advance westwards across North Africa.

In addition to the Africa Star he received the 1939–45 Star, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939–45, reflecting his overall service during the conflict.

This medal entitlement represents the career of a soldier who served with a famous Highland regiment during both pre-war imperial policing operations in Palestine and the major campaigns of the Second World War in North Africa, illustrating the transition of the British Army from imperial commitments to full-scale global war.
