Johnston Christie Geekie served as an officer in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) during the Second World War, holding the rank of Lieutenant and later Temporary Captain. He was commissioned from the ranks of the O.C.T.U., appearing in the London Gazette of 27 June 1941, with a seniority date of 7 June 1941, marking his entry into commissioned service during the early war years.
By April 1944, Geekie is recorded in the Army List as a Second Lieutenant, later holding the rank of War Substantive Lieutenant (from 1 October 1942), reflecting steady progression through the officer ranks within the regiment. His service number is consistently recorded as 190227, confirming continuity across records.
Geekie served in the North African theatre, where he was wounded in action, as recorded in Casualty List No. 1128, initially reported for the period ending 7 May 1943. A later correction (Casualty List No. 1141) clarifies that the date of casualty should read 26 April 1943, placing his wounding during the final stages of the North African campaign. His listing alongside other officers of the Black Watch in these casualty returns firmly places him within active frontline service during this critical period.
Following the war, Geekie applied for his campaign medals, confirming his full name as Johnston Christie Geekie, and giving his address as 80 Watson Street, Dundee, Angus. At the time of application, he held the rank of Temporary Captain and had been released from service on 21 June 1946 (Class ‘A’ release). His entitlement, as confirmed on the medal issue form dated 26 November 1948, comprised the 1939–45 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, and War Medal, indicating extensive wartime service across multiple theatres following his initial North African operations.
Post-war records show Geekie later residing in England. He died on 15 September 1992, aged 73, at St John’s Hospice, Moggerhanger, and was noted as being of Earith, Cambridgeshire. His obituary records him as the dearly loved husband of Margaret, and father of Jennifer and Madeleine, with a wider family including grandchildren.
