Samuel George Bickerton served with the Royal Army Service Corps (A.S.C.), Motor Transport section, under the number M2/032928. His Medal Index Card and Medal Roll entries confirm entitlement to the full 1914–15 Star Trio, having first entered a theatre of war on 29 March 1915, serving in Egypt during the early part of the First World War.
The A.S.C. played a crucial role throughout the campaign, keeping the British Army supplied with food, transport, munitions and equipment in often harsh desert conditions. The Motor Transport section was especially vital during the defence of the Suez Canal and the later operations against Ottoman forces.
Bickerton survived the war and was later discharged, with his civilian life well documented. Born in Ford, Shropshire, in 1890, he later worked as a builder and married Vera Florence Lane in 1921, a wedding reported in several newspapers of the time. He died in Shrewsbury in 1961.
