First World War British Victory Medal – Private John McKellar, 2nd Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders

Victory Medal – 4-8183 PTE. J. MC. KELLAR. A. & S. H.

Private John McKellar served with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders during the First World War, initially under the regimental number 4/8183 (coming from the 4th Bn.), later renumbered 201367. He saw active service in France & Flanders with the 2nd Battalion, one of the regiment’s regular battalions that went to France in August 1914 and fought continuously throughout the war.

McKellar is recorded as having been wounded on 21 June 1915, his name appearing in the official War Office casualty list. As a result, he became entitled to wear the Wound Stripe, authorised under Army Order 204 of 6 July 1916. The 2nd Argylls were heavily engaged throughout 1915, notably around Festubert and Givenchy, operating in grinding trench warfare where daily casualties from shellfire, sniping and raids were common.

A solid Great War Victory Medal to a soldier of a frontline Scottish infantry battalion, wounded during the demanding trench fighting of 1915.
