Born Dumfries, Scotland
Enlisted into West Yorkshire Regiment 17th Sept 1892, aged 17 and 11 months. He was already serving with the 3rd West Yorks Regt
Served 21 years and was in Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Singapore, and India for much of that time. He was awarded the LSGC
Discharged from the reserve 16th September 1913 after 21 years
After his time in the Army he lived in York and worked as a railwayman. He also played football for local teams (he had previously played for the regimental team)
Address on discharge: 5 Lower Darnborough Street, Bishopthorpe Rd, York
Re enlisted after the outbreak of the Great War
He was appointed Company Sergeant-Major in the 9th West Yorkshire Regiment
Arrived in Gallipoli 11th July 1915
Killed in Action - 22nd August 1915 - Shot through head during an advance
Remembered on the Helles Memorial, Türkiye
