Patrick O’Hara served with the 4th (Queen’s Own) Hussars, one of the British Army’s most historic cavalry regiments. His medal rolls confirm entitlement to the 1914–15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal, and show that he first entered a theatre of war on 24 July 1915, disembarking in the Egyptian Theatre.
At this stage of the war, the 4th Hussars had been redeployed from France to the Middle East to help counter the growing Ottoman threat. Cavalry units such as the Hussars played a vital role in reconnaissance, screening, and rapid-response duties—tasks particularly suited to mobile operations in the desert. They were engaged in securing key communication routes, protecting the Suez Canal zone, and preparing for later advances into Sinai and Palestine.
Men of the 4th Hussars often found themselves working in extreme conditions, dealing with heat, limited water supplies, and long-distance patrol work. As the war progressed, elements of the regiment supported the expanding British mounted forces that ultimately contributed to the successful Sinai–Palestine campaign.
After surviving the conflict, O’Hara was transferred to Class Z Reserve on 20 April 1919, marking the end of his wartime obligations.
A solid three-medal group to a scarce cavalry regiment, with early overseas service in Egypt.
