Harry Thomson was born in Inverness on 7 January 1897. He enlisted at Inverness on 4 September 1914, aged 19, joining the 4th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. His early service is confirmed by his inclusion in the Inverness West Parish Church Roll of Honour, printed in the Inverness Courier on 8 December 1914.
He proceeded overseas to France on 19 February 1915, joining the battalion on the Western Front during the early and costly phases of the war. On 26 September 1915, during the Battle of Loos, he was Wounded in Action and returned to the United Kingdom for treatment.
Following recovery, he was posted to the 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders, returning to active service. Over the following years he appeared repeatedly in official casualty lists, reflecting a remarkable record of endurance under fire:
- 15 September 1917 – Wounded in Action
- 2 May 1918 – Wounded in Action
- 25 June 1918 – Wounded in Action
- 5 October 1918 – Wounded in Action
Having been wounded on five separate occasions, Thomson nevertheless continued his military career. He later transferred to the Royal Army Service Corps, remaining in service throughout the 1920s and 1930s.
His long and exemplary service was recognised in 1936, when he was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal as a Staff Sergeant, marking over two decades of continuous and disciplined service following his hard-fought experiences on the Western Front.
