First World War British Victory Medal - Private Herbert Oswald Morris, 1st London Regiment, Later Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force
Victory Medal - 6174 PTE. H. MORRIS. 1-LOND.R.
Herbert Oswald Morris was born on 17 June 1888 in Guilden Morden, Cambridgeshire, one of several children of Walter and Martha Morris. Before the war he worked as a motor driver, a trade that would later shape his military service.
Morris first served in the London Regiment, taking part in operations on the Western Front. He was wounded in action, with his name appearing on the War Office casualty list of 6 October 1916, and was authorised to wear a Wound Stripe. After recovering, he returned to duty and continued to serve overseas.
In December 1917, Morris transferred from the infantry to the Royal Flying Corps, bringing his civilian driving experience into military use as a Motor Transport Driver. When the RFC and RNAS merged to form the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918, he became an Air Mechanic 3rd Class, continuing his service through the final year of the war.
Morris remained with the RAF until March 1919, after which he returned to civilian life. He married Kate Covington, raising a family, and spent his later years in Kent, where he died on 13 December 1981, aged 93.
