First World War Casualty Victory Medal – Private Duncan Grant, 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders – Wounded in Action December 1914, Early BEF

Duncan Grant was born in Inverness and enlisted into the Cameron Highlanders on 9th September 1914, shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. He was posted to the 1st Battalion, one of the original Regular Army battalions forming part of the British Expeditionary Force, and proceeded overseas to France on 17th December 1914, joining the battalion during the early and most intense phase of trench warfare on the Western Front.

Within days of arriving in France, Grant was wounded in action on 28th December 1914, during the brutal winter fighting that followed the First Battle of Ypres, a period characterised by heavy casualties, continuous trench engagements, and harsh conditions for newly arrived drafts. His wounding so soon after arrival highlights the severe attrition faced by reinforcements joining front-line units at this stage of the war.

As a result of his wounds, Grant was eventually discharged from the Army on 26th July 1916, bringing his period of active wartime service to an end. However, his military connection did not finish there. He later re-enlisted on 13th March 1920 into the Territorial Army, serving with the 4th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders, and continued in service for a considerable period in the post-war years, remaining with the Territorial Force until 1st August 1934, demonstrating long-term commitment well beyond his wartime service.

He was recorded as living at 3 Albert Place, and his service reflects that of an early war Regular reinforcement who saw immediate front-line action, suffered wounds in the opening months of trench warfare, and later continued his association with the regiment through extended Territorial service.
