Honorary Captain and Quartermaster Henry Solly served with the 19th (Service) Battalion, Middlesex Regiment (2nd Public Works Pioneers) during the Great War. A long-serving soldier, he had previously completed service in the Regular Army before being granted a commission in April 1915, later holding the rank of Lieutenant and Quartermaster, and subsequently Honorary Captain.
He was drafted to the Western Front in May 1916, taking part in severe fighting in France. Following his service there, he was transferred to Italy, where he again participated in important engagements during the Italian campaign. He later returned to France and served during the Retreat and Advance of 1918, the critical period of the German Spring Offensive and subsequent Allied counter-offensive.
For his services in the field he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette, 28 May 1918) for distinguished and gallant service and devotion to duty. During his overseas service he was wounded, yet continued his career through to the end of hostilities.
After the Armistice he proceeded to Germany with the Army of Occupation, serving on the Rhine until October 1919, when he returned home to be demobilised. His total service amounted to twenty-seven years with the Colours, reflecting a substantial pre-war and wartime military career.
He was entitled to the General Service Medal and the Victory Medal, and at the time of publication of his wartime record was residing at 30 Tilson Road, Tottenham, N.17. His career typifies that of the experienced long-service soldier who, on receiving a wartime commission, provided essential administrative and logistical leadership to Service battalions on active operations across multiple theatres.
