Charles McLean Christie was a native of Barrhead, Renfrewshire, born in 1893 and the son of Thomas and Mary McLean Christie of 68 Carlibar Road, Barrhead. Before the war he lived locally and was one of the many young men from the district who answered the call to arms.

He served with the 11th Battalion, Royal Scots, part of the 27th Brigade in the hard-fighting 9th (Scottish) Division. The battalion had taken heavy casualties on 1 July 1916, the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, and spent the following days in repeated attacks and counter-attacks around Montauban, Bernafay Wood, and Billon Wood.

Christie was listed as wounded in October 1915, evidence that he had already seen considerable fighting during his first year in France. Returning to action with his battalion for the Somme offensive, he was killed during the Attack on Longueval on 14 July 1916—a major assault in which the 11th Royal Scots played a central role. The fighting around Longueval and the adjacent woods was among the most brutal and confused of the entire campaign, costing the battalion many of its officers and men.

With no known grave, Private Christie is remembered with honour on the Thiepval Memorial, which bears the names of more than 72,000 soldiers who fell on the Somme and have no known resting place.
