He \u003cb\u003eenlisted at Stourbridge in April 1914\u003c\/b\u003e, joining the \u003cb\u003e1st\/7th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment\u003c\/b\u003e, and was still only a teenager when Britain entered the war later that year.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAfter service with the \u003cb\u003eTerritorial Force\u003c\/b\u003e, Parkes was posted overseas and served on the \u003cb\u003eWestern Front in France and Flanders\u003c\/b\u003e. He later served with the \u003cb\u003e3rd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment\u003c\/b\u003e, taking part in operations during the closing stages of the conflict. In the spring of \u003cb\u003e1918\u003c\/b\u003e, Worcestershire units were heavily engaged during the German offensives, fighting to stem the advance at a critical point in the war.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003ePrivate Parkes was \u003cb\u003ekilled in action on 10 April 1918\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e19\u003c\/b\u003e. Initially reported missing, his death was subsequently confirmed. With \u003cb\u003eno known grave\u003c\/b\u003e, he is commemorated on the \u003cb\u003ePloegsteert Memorial, Belgium (Panel 5)\u003c\/b\u003e. His \u003cb\u003emother, Mrs Annie Parkes\u003c\/b\u003e, was recorded as his dependant and later received a pension at the family home in Lye.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eA \u003cb\u003epre-war Territorial volunteer\u003c\/b\u003e who gave his life during the desperate fighting of 1918, Parkes represents a poignant example of the young men who answered the call early and never returned. A \u003cb\u003egroup comprising the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Territorial Force War Medal and Memorial Plaque to a casualty is particularly rare\u003c\/b\u003e, making this an especially scarce and historically significant combination.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003ePLEASE NOTE: All research will be sent to the buyer via email.
