He was the son of the late \u003cb\u003eJames Milne\u003c\/b\u003e, a dock labourer, and was the only surviving son of the family. His mother was \u003cb\u003eJane Burns McDonald\u003c\/b\u003e, who later acted as his dependant and guardian for pension purposes. The family were closely connected with \u003cb\u003eAshvale Place, Aberdeen\u003c\/b\u003e, where his sister, \u003cb\u003eMrs Booth\u003c\/b\u003e, resided at No. 30.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eJames enlisted in Aberdeen and initially served with the \u003cb\u003eSeaforth Highlanders\u003c\/b\u003e, being posted to the \u003cb\u003e3rd Battalion\u003c\/b\u003e. He was later transferred to the \u003cb\u003eLabour Corps\u003c\/b\u003e, serving with the \u003cb\u003e186th Battalion\u003c\/b\u003e, and was issued the regimental number \u003cb\u003e111363\u003c\/b\u003e. His original Seaforth Highlanders service number was \u003cb\u003eS\/14348\u003c\/b\u003e. Despite his transfer, he remained on active service on the Western Front.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003ePrivate Milne was \u003cb\u003ekilled in action on 22 December 1917\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e36 years\u003c\/b\u003e, while serving in \u003cb\u003eFrance and Flanders\u003c\/b\u003e. Contemporary newspaper reports record his death and note the considerable shock and sorrow felt by his family, particularly as he was the only surviving son. His death was deeply mourned in Aberdeen.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eFollowing his death, a dependant’s pension was awarded to his mother, \u003cb\u003eJane Burns McDonald\u003c\/b\u003e, who was recorded as his dependant and guardian. Pension documentation confirms his date and cause of death as “killed in action” and records his service with the Labour Corps at the time of his death.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eJames Milne is buried in \u003cb\u003eBoulogne Eastern Cemetery\u003c\/b\u003e, France, where he is commemorated in \u003cb\u003ePlot VIII, Row I, Grave 137\u003c\/b\u003e.
