The family later resided in \u003cb\u003eNorthumberland\u003c\/b\u003e, and by the time of the 1911 Census Frank was living with his parents at \u003cb\u003eWood Row, Plashetts\u003c\/b\u003e, near \u003cb\u003eFalstone\u003c\/b\u003e. He was one of a large family, with several brothers and sisters, and was closely associated with both \u003cb\u003eCanonbie\u003c\/b\u003e and \u003cb\u003ePlashetts\u003c\/b\u003e, the former being his birthplace and the latter his long-term home.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe enlisted at \u003cb\u003eHexham, Northumberland\u003c\/b\u003e, and joined the \u003cb\u003eScots Guards\u003c\/b\u003e, being allotted the regimental number \u003cb\u003e12772\u003c\/b\u003e. On enlistment he was posted to the \u003cb\u003e1st Battalion, Scots Guards\u003c\/b\u003e, and entered the \u003cb\u003eWestern European Theatre of War\u003c\/b\u003e with his battalion during the early stages of the Great War. Contemporary records and local newspaper reports confirm that he served in \u003cb\u003eFrance and Flanders\u003c\/b\u003e, taking part in active operations on the Western Front during 1915.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003ePrivate Steele was \u003cb\u003ekilled in action at Loos-en-Gohelle\u003c\/b\u003e on \u003cb\u003e27th September 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e21\u003c\/b\u003e, during the period of fighting associated with the \u003cb\u003eBattle of Loos\u003c\/b\u003e. A local newspaper report noted that he had resided at \u003cb\u003ePlashetts\u003c\/b\u003e, but was formerly from \u003cb\u003eCanonbie\u003c\/b\u003e, and described him as a son of \u003cb\u003eMr William Steele\u003c\/b\u003e. The same report recorded that he was \u003cb\u003e21 years of age\u003c\/b\u003e at the time of his death.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe has no known grave and is commemorated on the \u003cb\u003eLoos Memorial\u003c\/b\u003e, \u003cb\u003ePanels 8 and 9\u003c\/b\u003e, which bears the names of those who fell in the sector and whose final resting places are unknown. His service entitled him to the \u003cb\u003e1914–15 Star\u003c\/b\u003e, \u003cb\u003eBritish War Medal\u003c\/b\u003e, and \u003cb\u003eVictory Medal\u003c\/b\u003e, issued posthumously.
