He grew up in Hampshire before later settling in the London area, and by the outbreak of the Second World War was of working age, later being employed with the \u003cb\u003eBritish Postal Service, London Telecommunications Service\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eGodsell initially served as a \u003cb\u003eGunner in the Royal Artillery\u003c\/b\u003e, before being selected for officer training and commissioned into the \u003cb\u003eRoyal Corps of Signals\u003c\/b\u003e. His commission as a \u003cb\u003eSecond Lieutenant\u003c\/b\u003e was promulgated in the \u003ci\u003eLondon Gazette\u003c\/i\u003e in \u003cb\u003eJanuary 1942\u003c\/b\u003e, with seniority dated to \u003cb\u003e20 December 1941\u003c\/b\u003e. He later attained the rank of \u003cb\u003eCaptain\u003c\/b\u003e, serving in a technical and command capacity within the Signals during the height of the war.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eDuring his wartime service, Captain Godsell saw extensive operational service across multiple theatres. His medal entitlement confirms service in \u003cb\u003eNorth Africa with the First Army\u003c\/b\u003e, followed by the \u003cb\u003eItalian Campaign\u003c\/b\u003e, and later \u003cb\u003eNorth-West Europe\u003c\/b\u003e, qualifying him for the \u003cb\u003eFrance and Germany Star\u003c\/b\u003e.
