His father, \u003cb\u003eAlexander Tibbetts\u003c\/b\u003e, had served with the \u003cb\u003e4th Volunteer Battalion, Royal Scots\u003c\/b\u003e, for 27 years and was awarded the \u003cb\u003eVolunteer Long Service Medal (1903)\u003c\/b\u003e. The family’s military tradition extended further, with his grandfather having served in the \u003cb\u003eDumfries Volunteers\u003c\/b\u003e, and wider family connections in Dumfries and Parkhead.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAlbert Tibbetts enlisted in \u003cb\u003eApril 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, initially serving with the \u003cb\u003e2\/9th Royal Scots\u003c\/b\u003e, before later being attached to the \u003cb\u003eMachine Gun Section of the Royal Scots Fusiliers\u003c\/b\u003e, ultimately serving with the \u003cb\u003e1st Battalion\u003c\/b\u003e in France and Flanders.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe saw extensive front-line service and, as reported in a contemporary newspaper account, \u003cb\u003e“had come through a deal of fighting”\u003c\/b\u003e and had been \u003cb\u003ewounded in April 1917\u003c\/b\u003e. By this stage he had risen to the rank of \u003cb\u003eCorporal\u003c\/b\u003e, and was regarded highly by his officers.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe was killed in action on 26 September 1917\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003e, aged 23, during the fighting at \u003cb\u003ePasschendaele\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eA letter from his commanding officer to his mother stated:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003e“I must express to you my sincere sympathy at the great loss you have sustained by the death of your son.
