By the time of the Great War he was married to \u003cb\u003eSarah Wilkinson\u003c\/b\u003e, and the couple lived at \u003cb\u003e12 Lower Graham Street, South Bank, York\u003c\/b\u003e, a working-class area closely associated with railway and industrial employment.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eWilkinson enlisted into the \u003cb\u003eRoyal Field Artillery\u003c\/b\u003e and entered active service early in the war, proceeding overseas on \u003cb\u003e19th May 1915\u003c\/b\u003e. He served as a \u003cb\u003eDriver\u003c\/b\u003e, a vital role within the artillery, responsible for handling horse teams, moving guns, ammunition wagons and supplies, often under fire and in extremely demanding conditions. His unit is recorded as \u003cb\u003e5th “C” Reserve Brigade, Royal Field Artillery\u003c\/b\u003e, and his service included overseas duty.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eDuring his time in uniform Wilkinson suffered from \u003cb\u003eill-health\u003c\/b\u003e, and by \u003cb\u003e16th May 1917\u003c\/b\u003e he was deemed \u003cb\u003eno longer physically fit for war service\u003c\/b\u003e. He was discharged under \u003cb\u003eParagraph 392 (xvi) of King’s Regulations\u003c\/b\u003e, a regulation commonly applied to men whose health had been permanently affected by military service. In recognition of this, he was issued the \u003cb\u003eSilver War Badge\u003c\/b\u003e, number \u003cb\u003e176,697\u003c\/b\u003e, confirming honourable service and discharge due to sickness.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eJoseph Wilkinson \u003cb\u003edied on 9th December 1919\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e32\u003c\/b\u003e, his death occurring after the end of the war but while still classed as having \u003cb\u003edied in active service\u003c\/b\u003e. He is buried in \u003cb\u003eEston Cemetery\u003c\/b\u003e, where he is commemorated in \u003cb\u003eGrave Q.687\u003c\/b\u003e, and his sacrifice is formally recognised by the \u003cb\u003eCommonwealth War Graves Commission\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003ePLEASE NOTE: All research will be sent to the buyer via email.
