He was educated at \u003cb\u003eCambridge University\u003c\/b\u003e, graduating \u003cb\u003eMA in 1934\u003c\/b\u003e, before continuing his medical training and obtaining his \u003cb\u003eMB in 1937\u003c\/b\u003e. In \u003cb\u003e1938\u003c\/b\u003e he was elected \u003cb\u003eMember of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP)\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eFollowing his medical training he worked as a \u003cb\u003ehouse surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge\u003c\/b\u003e, and later trained at \u003cb\u003eWestminster Hospital\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAt the outbreak of the \u003cb\u003eSecond World War\u003c\/b\u003e, Coghill joined the \u003cb\u003eRoyal Army Medical Corps\u003c\/b\u003e in \u003cb\u003eDecember 1939\u003c\/b\u003e. During the war he served primarily in the \u003cb\u003eMiddle East theatre\u003c\/b\u003e, including service in \u003cb\u003eEgypt, Cyprus, Syria and Libya\u003c\/b\u003e. In \u003cb\u003e1946\u003c\/b\u003e he began work at \u003cb\u003eHammersmith Hospital\u003c\/b\u003e, and in \u003cb\u003e1947\u003c\/b\u003e joined the \u003cb\u003eWest Middlesex Hospital\u003c\/b\u003e, where he worked for more than \u003cb\u003ethirty years as a consultant physician\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe became one of the \u003cb\u003epioneers of British gastroenterology\u003c\/b\u003e, helping to develop one of the earliest specialist gastroenterology units in the country. Coghill was particularly known for his work on \u003cb\u003egastric biopsy techniques\u003c\/b\u003e, an important diagnostic tool in the study of \u003cb\u003eatrophic gastritis and pernicious anaemia\u003c\/b\u003e, and published research on the subject in the \u003cb\u003eBritish Journal of Haematology\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHis influence extended beyond clinical medicine. Coghill served as \u003cb\u003ePresident of the British Society of Gastroenterology\u003c\/b\u003e, where he actively promoted improved staffing, research and equipment within hospital gastroenterology departments. In \u003cb\u003e1970\u003c\/b\u003e, while serving as president of the society, he chaired the steering group which gathered the evidence that led to the creation of the \u003cb\u003eDigestive Disorders Trust Fund\u003c\/b\u003e, later known as the charity \u003cb\u003eCORE – Fighting Digestive Diseases\u003c\/b\u003e, which became a major funding body for research into gastrointestinal conditions.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eKnown for his strong principles and commitment to improving patient care, Coghill also helped establish \u003cb\u003eoccupational health services for hospital staff\u003c\/b\u003e and encouraged junior doctors to pursue clinical research.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eLater in life he cared for his wife at home after she developed \u003cb\u003emulti-infarct dementia\u003c\/b\u003e, remaining devoted to both his family and his profession.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eMajor Nelson Fuller Coghill died on \u003cb\u003e21 April 2002 at Ealing, London\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e89\u003c\/b\u003e.
