During the North African campaign he distinguished himself while serving as a \u003cb\u003eCorporal\u003c\/b\u003e, for which he was \u003cb\u003eMentioned in Despatches\u003c\/b\u003e, an award published in the \u003ci\u003eLondon Gazette\u003c\/i\u003e on \u003cb\u003e23 September 1943\u003c\/b\u003e.
