He enlisted for service on \u003cb\u003e16 January 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, joining the \u003cb\u003eArmy Service Corps\u003c\/b\u003e as a \u003cb\u003ePrivate\u003c\/b\u003e with the service number \u003cb\u003eT-044147\u003c\/b\u003e. His \u003cb\u003eFirst World War service papers have survived\u003c\/b\u003e, allowing his military career to be traced in unusual detail.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAfter embarkation to \u003cb\u003eFrance on 28 October 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, Corbin was posted to the \u003cb\u003e49th Field Bakery\u003c\/b\u003e, part of the \u003cb\u003e37th Division\u003c\/b\u003e, where he served in his civilian trade supplying bread to front-line troops. Field bakeries were a vital but often overlooked component of the BEF’s logistics system, operating close to the fighting and under constant pressure to maintain supply.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eDuring his overseas service he suffered periods of illness, including admission to hospital in \u003cb\u003eJune 1917\u003c\/b\u003e with \u003cb\u003eneurasthenia\u003c\/b\u003e, after which he was returned to duty via a \u003cb\u003eConvalescent Depot\u003c\/b\u003e. In \u003cb\u003eOctober 1917\u003c\/b\u003e, Corbin was \u003cb\u003ecompulsorily transferred from the Army Service Corps to the King’s Royal Rifle Corps\u003c\/b\u003e, being re-trained as an infantryman and posted as a \u003cb\u003eRifleman\u003c\/b\u003e to the \u003cb\u003e17th Battalion, KRRC (C Company)\u003c\/b\u003e. At this time he was allotted the new service number \u003cb\u003e202800\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eDuring the German Spring Offensive, Corbin was \u003cb\u003ereported missing on 26 March 1918\u003c\/b\u003e. Subsequent official enquiries and casualty lists confirmed that he had been \u003cb\u003etaken prisoner of war\u003c\/b\u003e, and he remained in captivity in Germany until the end of hostilities. He was \u003cb\u003ereleased and returned to England on 9 December 1918\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eCorbin was \u003cb\u003edemobilised in April 1919\u003c\/b\u003e and transferred to the Army Reserve. His service represents a full and compelling First World War narrative: early overseas service with a \u003cb\u003eDivisional Field Bakery\u003c\/b\u003e, illness and recovery, \u003cb\u003etransfer to an infantry rifle battalion\u003c\/b\u003e, capture during major operations, and eventual repatriation.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003ePLEASE NOTE: All research will be sent to the buyer via email.
