At the time of the \u003cb\u003e1901 Census\u003c\/b\u003e he was residing at \u003cb\u003eHillyland Village, Perthshire\u003c\/b\u003e, aged eighteen, and employed as a \u003cb\u003esilk dyer\u003c\/b\u003e, reflecting his father’s trade.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe later settled in Perth and married \u003cb\u003eSarah Elizabeth Haven\u003c\/b\u003e, a dressmaker of \u003cb\u003e6 Rosario Terrace, Jeanfield, Perth\u003c\/b\u003e, at \u003cb\u003eSt Ninian’s Cathedral, Perth, on 14 January 1915\u003c\/b\u003e. A contemporary newspaper report described the occasion as a “Perth Military Wedding,” noting that Sergeant Small’s wife’s father was serving with the \u003cb\u003e1st Scottish Horse\u003c\/b\u003e at the time. The ceremony was conducted by the Very Rev. Provost Patrick Murray Smythe, and members of the Scottish Horse formed a guard of honour for the couple following the reception.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHis Commonwealth War Graves Commission entry records the \u003cb\u003eVolunteer Long Service Medal\u003c\/b\u003e; however, given his age this is unlikely to be correct. Contemporary records instead indicate that he was awarded the \u003cb\u003eTerritorial Force Efficiency Medal\u003c\/b\u003e in \u003cb\u003e1914\u003c\/b\u003e for service with the \u003cb\u003e6th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)\u003c\/b\u003e, reflecting substantial pre-war service in the Territorial Force.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eDuring the Great War he served with the \u003cb\u003e6\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e Bn. Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)\u003c\/b\u003e before transferring to the \u003cb\u003e1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders\u003c\/b\u003e. He attained the rank of \u003cb\u003eSerjeant\u003c\/b\u003e, service number \u003cb\u003e238039\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBy 1917 he was serving on the Western Front with the 1st Gordons. On \u003cb\u003e26 September 1917\u003c\/b\u003e, during operations at \u003cb\u003eZonnebeke\u003c\/b\u003e, Belgium, in the Third Battle of Ypres, Serjeant Donald Campbell Small was \u003cb\u003ekilled in action\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e34\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eA local casualty report recorded that his wife resided at \u003cb\u003e6 Rosario Terrace, Jeanfield, Perth\u003c\/b\u003e, and that his parents were living at \u003cb\u003eHillyland, Perth\u003c\/b\u003e. His death was later commemorated in a family memorial notice describing him as killed in action at Zonnebeke on 26 September 1917, the dearly loved husband of Bessie Haven Small of Rosario Terrace, Perth.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe has no known grave and is commemorated on the \u003cb\u003eTyne Cot Memorial, Belgium (Panels 135–136)\u003c\/b\u003e.
