He was baptised on 6 March 1881 and later entered the service of the Egyptian Government, beginning a long association with Egypt and the Middle East which would shape both his civilian and military careers.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBy the time of the 1921 Census, Bolton was employed as an Egyptian Government official in the Survey Department of the Ministry of Finance. Although temporarily recorded as a boarder at the Golden Cross Hotel in London, his usual place of work was given as the Savoy Hotel, Cairo. His employment would have involved the administrative and surveying work required by the Egyptian Government, and the surviving records indicate that he spent a considerable part of his working life overseas.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBolton married Mercia Bowtell in July 1921. The couple had at least two daughters, Audrey Lilian Cecile Bolton, born in June 1926, and Frances Stella Faith Bolton, born the following month. A passenger record from 1926 shows Bolton travelling from London to Port Said aboard the SS Matiana, by which time he was described as a former Egyptian Government official.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBy 1939, Bolton had returned to Britain and was living with Mercia and their family at 204 Franklin’s Village, Haywards Heath, Sussex. He was then employed as a company secretary, with the register also noting his previous service in the Egyptian Survey or Land Demarcation administration.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eDespite being nearly sixty years old when the Second World War began, Bolton returned to military service. He was granted a Regular Army Emergency Commission as Second Lieutenant on 16 February 1940, under service number 119838. His early wartime records place him on the General List, and he was promoted to Acting Lieutenant on 12 April 1940.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBolton served in France during the campaign of 1940 and was reported wounded on Casualty List No. 271, published on 2 August 1940. A later casualty list corrected his rank at the time of the incident to Acting Lieutenant. His survival and subsequent return to service are particularly noteworthy given his age and the confused conditions surrounding the collapse of Allied resistance in France.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe was appointed War Substantive Lieutenant on 12 October 1940 and later attained the rank of Temporary Captain on 11 June 1941. Subsequent Army Lists associate him with the Pioneer Corps, where he was recorded as being specially employed. The precise nature of this employment is not stated in the surviving records, but his extensive civil-service experience in Egypt, together with his administrative and surveying background, would have provided valuable skills for military work.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBolton later served in the India and South-East Asia theatre, as demonstrated by his entitlement to the Burma Star and by the original insignia accompanying his medals. These include a British Indian Army cap badge and a cloth formation badge for South East Asia Allied Land Forces. His service therefore extended from the fighting in France in 1940 to the campaign against Japan in Asia, an unusually wide-ranging wartime career for an officer who was already in his sixties.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eFor his service, Bolton received the 1939–45 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and War Medal.
