He spent his early life in Sunderland and appears in the \u003cb\u003e1891 Census living at 45 Hood Street, Monkwearmouth\u003c\/b\u003e with his family.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAt some point prior to the First World War he emigrated to \u003cb\u003eCanada\u003c\/b\u003e, eventually settling at \u003cb\u003eCalgary, Alberta\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eWith the expansion of the Canadian forces during the war he enlisted for service with the \u003cb\u003eCanadian Expeditionary Force on 16th June 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, joining the \u003cb\u003eCanadian Army Medical Corps\u003c\/b\u003e. He was posted to \u003cb\u003e“C” Section, No. 1 Field Ambulance Depot, C.A.M.C.\u003c\/b\u003e, a unit responsible for receiving and processing wounded soldiers evacuated from the front before further transfer to casualty clearing stations and hospitals.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eDuring his service he later became attached to the \u003cb\u003eC.A.M.C. Gas Company\u003c\/b\u003e, a specialised unit formed to assist in the treatment and management of casualties from \u003cb\u003epoison gas attacks\u003c\/b\u003e, which had become a major feature of warfare on the Western Front.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eCowey rose to the rank of \u003cb\u003eCorporal\u003c\/b\u003e, though his wartime service was affected by a number of \u003cb\u003emedical issues and illnesses\u003c\/b\u003e, details of which are recorded extensively in his large surviving service file. Such ailments were common among medical personnel who worked under difficult conditions close behind the front lines.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eFollowing the end of the war he returned to \u003cb\u003eCanada in 1919\u003c\/b\u003e, resuming civilian life in \u003cb\u003eCalgary, Alberta\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eCowey lived in Canada for the remainder of his life and \u003cb\u003edied at Calgary on 18th November 1956\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e68 years\u003c\/b\u003e.
