A clerk by occupation, he initially attested for the \u003cb\u003eLovat Scouts\u003c\/b\u003e, but after ten or so months he was transferred to the \u003cb\u003eCameron Highlanders\u003c\/b\u003e, serving under the regimental numbers \u003cb\u003e6238\u003c\/b\u003e and later \u003cb\u003eS\/40862\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBeeching underwent training at the Cameron Highlanders’ depots before proceeding to France, where he was posted to the 4th Entrenching Battalion of the Camerons, and then the \u003cb\u003e5th Battalion\u003c\/b\u003e, a unit that spent the second half of 1916 and 1917 in intense front-line service on the Western Front. His service papers record several periods of hospitalisation and return to duty, a pattern typical of infantrymen operating in the heavy fighting of late 1916 as the Somme offensive continued into its attritional later phase.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBeeching continued to serve during the final advances of 1918 before being transferred to \u003cb\u003eClass Z Reserve\u003c\/b\u003e in 1919 and finally \u003cb\u003edemobilised on 31 March 1920\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAfter the war, Percy returned to civilian life in London, marrying in 1921 and later settling in Sussex.
