He was the \u003cb\u003eson of Christopher and Mary McLennan of Letterfearn, Kyle, Ross-shire\u003c\/b\u003e, a family long established in the west Highlands. His name is commemorated locally on the \u003cb\u003eEilean Donan Castle – Parish of Glenshiel WW1 Roll of Honour\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe enlisted at \u003cb\u003eInverness on 2nd May 1905\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e21\u003c\/b\u003e, and is recorded as having had \u003cb\u003eprior service with the Lovat Scouts\u003c\/b\u003e, a notable yeomanry unit raised in the Highlands and Islands. By 1914 he was serving as a \u003cb\u003eLance Corporal\u003c\/b\u003e in the \u003cb\u003e1st Battalion, Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eWith the outbreak of war, the 1st Camerons were among the first British infantry battalions to mobilise. \u003cb\u003eDonald McLennan went to France on 14th August 1914\u003c\/b\u003e, landing with the original British Expeditionary Force during the opening phase of the conflict. The battalion took part in the early fighting of the retreat from Mons and subsequent actions during the hard-fought mobile battles of August and September 1914.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBy \u003cb\u003e11th November 1914\u003c\/b\u003e, Lance Corporal McLennan was serving with \u003cb\u003eB Company, 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders\u003c\/b\u003e, when he was \u003cb\u003ekilled in action\u003c\/b\u003e. Contemporary records initially listed him as \u003cb\u003emissing\u003c\/b\u003e, with War Office casualty lists and \u003ci\u003eThe Times\u003c\/i\u003e reporting him as such into early 1915. Enquiries were made on behalf of his family, including correspondence via the \u003cb\u003eBritish Red Cross Society, Paris\u003c\/b\u003e, reflecting the uncertainty faced by relatives during the early months of the war when identification and reporting were often delayed.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eSubsequent confirmation established that he had been killed during fighting in \u003cb\u003eFrance\u003c\/b\u003e, with Imperial War Museum and CWGC records later specifying the \u003cb\u003eAisne\u003c\/b\u003e sector as the place of death. As his body was not recovered or identified, \u003cb\u003eDonald McLennan has no known grave\u003c\/b\u003e. He is commemorated on the \u003cb\u003eYpres (Menin Gate) Memorial\u003c\/b\u003e, \u003cb\u003ePanel 38\u003c\/b\u003e, among the thousands of officers and men who fell in 1914 and whose resting places remain unknown.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAt the time of his death, he was \u003cb\u003e31 years of age\u003c\/b\u003e. His loss was formally recognised in national and regimental records, which confirm his status as \u003cb\u003eKilled in Action\u003c\/b\u003e, bringing closure to the period in which he had been listed as missing.
