He grew up in the Bothwell \/ Mossend district, appearing in the \u003cb\u003e1871 Census (aged 7, scholar)\u003c\/b\u003e with his parents and siblings, and by \u003cb\u003e1881 (aged 17)\u003c\/b\u003e he was working locally as an \u003cb\u003eiron puddler\u003c\/b\u003e, a tough, skilled job in Lanarkshire’s heavy industry. By \u003cb\u003e1891 (aged 26)\u003c\/b\u003e he is again recorded as an \u003cb\u003eiron worker\u003c\/b\u003e, still living at home with his parents.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAt the age of \u003cb\u003e18\u003c\/b\u003e, White joined the \u003cb\u003eQueen’s Own Cameron Highlanders\u003c\/b\u003e on \u003cb\u003e11th December 1884\u003c\/b\u003e, and served during the \u003cb\u003eEgypt \u0026amp; Sudan Campaign\u003c\/b\u003e between \u003cb\u003e3rd December 1885 and 25th March 1887\u003c\/b\u003e. His service included operations on the \u003cb\u003eUpper Nile, 1885–86\u003c\/b\u003e, for which he was awarded the \u003cb\u003eEgypt Medal\u003c\/b\u003e and the \u003cb\u003eKhedive’s Star\u003c\/b\u003e – a classic Cameron Highlanders entitlement from the Victorian “small wars” era, and the foundation of a remarkably long and varied military career.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eFollowing his Cameron service, White later transferred to the \u003cb\u003eArmy Ordnance\u003c\/b\u003e establishment, being \u003cb\u003edischarged in 1896\u003c\/b\u003e, and returned to civilian life in Lanarkshire. In \u003cb\u003e1892\u003c\/b\u003e, he also appears in the \u003cb\u003eGlasgow (Duke Street) Prison Register\u003c\/b\u003e, recorded as \u003cb\u003eRobert Whyte\u003c\/b\u003e, an \u003cb\u003eiron worker\u003c\/b\u003e of \u003cb\u003eMossend\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e27\u003c\/b\u003e, born \u003cb\u003eBothwell\u003c\/b\u003e (NRS ref. \u003cb\u003eHH21\/32\/119 p.91\u003c\/b\u003e).\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eStill drawn to soldiering, he joined the \u003cb\u003e4th Militia Battalion, Argyll \u0026amp; Sutherland Highlanders\u003c\/b\u003e on \u003cb\u003e31st March 1897 (aged 31)\u003c\/b\u003e, but was \u003cb\u003edischarged by purchase on 16th June 1898\u003c\/b\u003e. Not long afterwards, he returned to regular military employment, enlisting in the \u003cb\u003eArmy Ordnance Corps\u003c\/b\u003e in \u003cb\u003e1900\u003c\/b\u003e, and served overseas during the period \u003cb\u003e29th June 1900 to 3rd March 1904\u003c\/b\u003e, including service connected with \u003cb\u003eChina\u003c\/b\u003e, with the bulk of this overseas time recorded as being \u003cb\u003eat Hong Kong\u003c\/b\u003e. His service papers also confirm time in \u003cb\u003eAustralia\u003c\/b\u003e immediately before the China \/ Hong Kong posting – an unusually well-travelled career for an Other Rank of his era.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eWith the outbreak of the Great War, White re-enlisted in the \u003cb\u003eArmy Ordnance Corps\u003c\/b\u003e on \u003cb\u003e25th August 1914\u003c\/b\u003e, giving his age as \u003cb\u003e47 years and 8 months\u003c\/b\u003e. He landed in \u003cb\u003eFrance on 17th May 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, and served throughout the war, being \u003cb\u003edischarged on 14th March 1919\u003c\/b\u003e. He was awarded the \u003cb\u003e1914–15 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal\u003c\/b\u003e, adding a First World War trio to his earlier Victorian campaign awards and making him one of those exceptional “double-period” soldiers whose service bridges the late-Victorian Empire and the industrial warfare of 1914–18.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eWhite died on \u003cb\u003e16th August 1941\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e76\u003c\/b\u003e, his occupation recorded as a \u003cb\u003eretired steel worker\u003c\/b\u003e, and his address given as \u003cb\u003e13 Hawthorn Gardens, Mossend\u003c\/b\u003e. A local newspaper tribute described him as “\u003cb\u003eOld Bob\u003c\/b\u003e”, a well-known figure in the community, remembered as a soldier of the old school who was proud to appear on parade with his \u003cb\u003edouble row of medals\u003c\/b\u003e, and noted that even at the outbreak of the Second World War he still felt it his duty to do something, though the authorities would not accept him once his true age was apparent.
