He appears in the \u003cb\u003e1901 Census\u003c\/b\u003e aged seven, living at a crofter’s house in Sleat with his parents and extended family. Prior to enlistment he was resident at \u003cb\u003eAlexandria, Dumbartonshire\u003c\/b\u003e, and worked in civilian life as a \u003cb\u003emachineman\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eMacPherson enlisted at \u003cb\u003eAlexandria on 3 December 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e22\u003c\/b\u003e, joining the \u003cb\u003eQueen’s Own Cameron Highlanders\u003c\/b\u003e. He was posted to the \u003cb\u003e6th Battalion\u003c\/b\u003e, a \u003cb\u003ewar service battalion\u003c\/b\u003e, and received \u003cb\u003eregimental number S\/26100\u003c\/b\u003e. Following training, the battalion proceeded to \u003cb\u003eFrance and Flanders\u003c\/b\u003e, where it entered active service on the Western Front.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBy \u003cb\u003eApril 1917\u003c\/b\u003e, the \u003cb\u003e6th Camerons\u003c\/b\u003e were engaged in operations during the \u003cb\u003eBattle of Arras\u003c\/b\u003e, a major British offensive characterised by sustained infantry assaults against heavily defended German positions. The battalion took part in the fighting in the Arras sector during the opening stages of the offensive.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003ePrivate Donald MacPherson\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003e was \u003cb\u003ewounded during the fighting\u003c\/b\u003e and \u003cb\u003edied of his wounds on 11 April 1917\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e23\u003c\/b\u003e. He has \u003cb\u003eno known grave\u003c\/b\u003e and is \u003cb\u003ecommemorated on the Arras Memorial\u003c\/b\u003e, \u003cb\u003eBay 9\u003c\/b\u003e, which records the names of those who fell in the Arras sector and whose graves are unknown.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eContemporary reports from Skye recorded his death and noted that his family had suffered a further loss, as \u003cb\u003ehis younger brother, Alexander MacPherson, had been lost when a minesweeper was sunk approximately one month earlier\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eDonald MacPherson is \u003cb\u003enamed on the Sleat War Memorial\u003c\/b\u003e, ensuring his service is permanently recorded within his home community on the Isle of Skye.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003ePLEASE NOTE: All research will be sent to the buyer via email.
