He enlisted in the British Army at Leyton and served as Private 242076 with the 7th (Service) Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBy November 1917, Walter had completed approximately one year and two months of military service. On 30 November 1917, aged nineteen, he was admitted for treatment for scabies, an infectious skin condition that was common among troops living in crowded and unsanitary wartime conditions. After several days of treatment, he was discharged and returned to duty on 6 December 1917. His hospital record identifies him as a member of the Church of England and confirms his service with the 7th Battalion.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eWalter subsequently returned to active service with his battalion. During the renewed heavy fighting on the Western Front in March 1918, he received serious wounds. He was evacuated through the military medical system but died from those wounds on 28 March 1918, aged only twenty. His official records consistently identify his death as having occurred while serving in France and Flanders, although one pension document records the date as 24 March, apparently in error.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe was buried in Étaples Military Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France, in Plot XXXI, Row J, Grave 2. His surviving financial records show that the balance of his Army pay and effects, amounting to £5 19s. 1d., was issued to her. She also received a War Gratuity of £6, together with a dependant’s pension of five shillings per week for life.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eFor his wartime service, Arthur William Walter was posthumously awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
