Prior to the war he was employed as a \u003cb\u003ejourneyman jeweller with Fraser, Ferguson and Macbean\u003c\/b\u003e, a well-known Inverness firm.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe \u003cb\u003eattested for the 4th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders on 24th November 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, initially entering the \u003cb\u003eArmy Reserve\u003c\/b\u003e, before being \u003cb\u003emobilised on 31st May 1916\u003c\/b\u003e. He later served with \u003cb\u003e“C” Company, 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders\u003c\/b\u003e, with whom he went overseas.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eFraser was reported \u003cb\u003emissing during the fighting around Ypres\u003c\/b\u003e, and was subsequently confirmed to have been \u003cb\u003ecaptured and taken Prisoner of War on 1st August 1917\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eContemporary newspaper reports give a clear and personal insight into his situation at the time. One early report states:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003e“Mrs Fraser, Ness Place, Haugh, Inverness, has received a post-card from her son, Pte. Donald Fraser, stating that he is a prisoner-of-war in Germany. Pte. Fraser was a journeyman jeweller in Fraser, Ferguson, and Macbean’s establishment previous to enlisting in the Cameron Highlanders. Donald John Fraser, Cameron Highlanders, who had been reported missing, but is a prisoner of war. In his letter Pte. Fraser says:—‘I am all right, getting along first-rate, and always in the best of health. Our camp here is very comfortable and up-to-date. There are a fine concert hall and picture-house, also a fine band, which helps to make things very cheerful for us all.’ Pte.
