B. Peat \u0026amp; Co., Chartered Accountants, Ironmonger Lane, EC2\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eOn \u003cb\u003e8 September 1914\u003c\/b\u003e, in the first weeks of the war, he joined at the \u003cb\u003eLondon Scottish Drill Hall\u003c\/b\u003e. At this time the \u003cb\u003eMacKay brothers of Inverness\u003c\/b\u003e, officers serving with the \u003cb\u003e4th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders\u003c\/b\u003e, were sent south from Bedford to recruit men for the battalion. George Smart was among those recruited into the Highland ranks.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe was posted to the \u003cb\u003e4th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders (No. 2095)\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eThe battalion landed in France on \u003cb\u003e19 February 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, joining the 1st Division. Smart was \u003cb\u003eWounded in Action\u003c\/b\u003e that day, surviving an action which effectively shattered the battalion.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eThe cumulative losses of 1915 proved so severe that the \u003cb\u003e4th Battalion was eventually disbanded\u003c\/b\u003e, its surviving men redistributed.
