He was the \u003cb\u003eson of Mr. A. M. P. Stewart\u003c\/b\u003e of that address.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe left school in \u003cb\u003e1908\u003c\/b\u003e and was \u003cb\u003eapprenticed to engineering\u003c\/b\u003e, before enlisting in \u003cb\u003eOctober 1914\u003c\/b\u003e, shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. He joined the \u003cb\u003e4th Cameron Highlanders\u003c\/b\u003e and was \u003cb\u003edrafted to France on 17 February 1915\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eWithin \u003cb\u003eten days of arriving in France\u003c\/b\u003e, Stewart was \u003cb\u003ewounded during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle (March 1915)\u003c\/b\u003e. Following his recovery, he returned to active service and later took part in operations at \u003cb\u003eFestubert\u003c\/b\u003e, where his platoon suffered \u003cb\u003eheavy casualties\u003c\/b\u003e, only a handful coming through unscathed. The effects of this fighting, combined with exposure, led to further periods of ill health and hospitalisation.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAlthough he returned to duty, his health remained impaired. After further treatment he was eventually deemed \u003cb\u003eunfit for front-line service\u003c\/b\u003e and was \u003cb\u003eemployed in munitions work\u003c\/b\u003e, still technically in military service. He was finally \u003cb\u003edischarged on 24 December 1918\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHis health, however, had been \u003cb\u003epermanently damaged by his wartime service\u003c\/b\u003e, and he \u003cb\u003edied at home on 11 March 1919\u003c\/b\u003e, aged just \u003cb\u003e27\u003c\/b\u003e. He is buried in \u003cb\u003eGlasgow (Eastwood) Old Cemetery\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eStewart’s story is a strong example of a man who \u003cb\u003esurvived the battlefield but ultimately succumbed to the lasting effects of his service\u003c\/b\u003e, having been \u003cb\u003ewounded early in the war and repeatedly impacted by front-line conditions thereafter\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003ePLEASE NOTE: All research will be sent to the buyer via email.
