He enlisted into the \u003cb\u003eRoyal Artillery on 12 March 1942\u003c\/b\u003e, and following his initial training was posted to the \u003cb\u003e4th Field Training Regiment\u003c\/b\u003e on \u003cb\u003e20 July 1942\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHis wartime service saw him posted through a number of Royal Artillery units as Britain expanded and reorganised its field forces. On \u003cb\u003e18 June 1943\u003c\/b\u003e he joined the \u003cb\u003e56th Medium Regiment\u003c\/b\u003e, followed shortly afterwards by service with the \u003cb\u003e60th Heavy Regiment\u003c\/b\u003e from \u003cb\u003e21 July 1943\u003c\/b\u003e. He returned to the \u003cb\u003e56th Medium Regiment\u003c\/b\u003e on \u003cb\u003e1 November 1943\u003c\/b\u003e, before brief postings to the \u003cb\u003e3rd Reserve Regiment\u003c\/b\u003e and \u003cb\u003e177th Field Regiment\u003c\/b\u003e in November 1943. On \u003cb\u003e14 March 1944\u003c\/b\u003e he was posted to the \u003cb\u003e25th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery\u003c\/b\u003e, the unit with which he would see active service in North West Europe.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBombardier Walker landed in \u003cb\u003eFrance in June 1944\u003c\/b\u003e, shortly after D-Day, and served continuously with 25th Field Regiment during the advance through \u003cb\u003eFrance, Belgium, the Netherlands, and into Germany\u003c\/b\u003e. By \u003cb\u003eOctober 1944\u003c\/b\u003e the regiment had entered the Netherlands, moving through \u003cb\u003eLeende, Zeeland, Overloon, St. Anthonis, Heusden, and Asten\u003c\/b\u003e. During this period the regiment took part in the \u003cb\u003eBattle of Overloon\u003c\/b\u003e and the critical fighting near \u003cb\u003eMeijel\u003c\/b\u003e, where 25th Field Regiment was placed under command of the \u003cb\u003e7th US Armoured Division\u003c\/b\u003e to halt a determined German counter-attack. The regiment fired exceptionally heavy concentrations, including more than \u003cb\u003e10,000 rounds on 29 October 1944\u003c\/b\u003e, at times engaging enemy forces within only a few hundred yards of their observation posts. The action became one of the most celebrated artillery engagements of the North West Europe campaign, earning the regiment a \u003cb\u003eDistinguished Unit Citation\u003c\/b\u003e and the honour title \u003cb\u003e25 (Asten) Battery\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eThe regiment continued operations through \u003cb\u003eVenray, Liesel, Blerick, Sevenum, Deurne and Maasbree\u003c\/b\u003e, suffering Luftwaffe attacks in early \u003cb\u003eJanuary 1945\u003c\/b\u003e, before finally \u003cb\u003eentering Germany on 20 March 1945\u003c\/b\u003e as part of the final Allied advance.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; line-height: normal;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eRonald William Walker survived the war and was awarded the \u003cb\u003e1939–45 Star, France \u0026amp; Germany Star, and War Medal\u003c\/b\u003e, issued to him in the original \u003cb\u003ecardboard box addressed to Mr R. W. Walker, 9 Mayfield Avenue, Macclesfield, Cheshire\u003c\/b\u003e.
