The family were residing at \u003cb\u003e113 Edith Road, Smethwick\u003c\/b\u003e, at the time of the \u003cb\u003e1939 Register\u003c\/b\u003e, where Arthur was recorded as working as an \u003cb\u003eAluminium Moulder’s Assistant\u003c\/b\u003e, reflecting the heavy industrial and metalworking trades typical of the Black Country.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe enlisted for service in the \u003cb\u003eBritish Army on 2nd May 1941 at Smethwick\u003c\/b\u003e, joining the \u003cb\u003eRoyal Engineers\u003c\/b\u003e and serving as \u003cb\u003eSapper Arthur Edward Cartwright, No. 1947367\u003c\/b\u003e. He was posted to the \u003cb\u003e256 Field Company, Royal Engineers\u003c\/b\u003e, a unit responsible for essential combat engineering duties including the construction of bridges and defences, mine clearance, demolitions and maintaining routes of advance for Allied forces.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eCartwright served overseas in the \u003cb\u003eNorth African theatre\u003c\/b\u003e during the later stages of the campaign against Axis forces. Tragically, he was \u003cb\u003eaccidentally killed in North Africa on 22nd January 1943\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e18 years\u003c\/b\u003e. Contemporary records note that the incident occurred \u003cb\u003ewhile on duty\u003c\/b\u003e, and that \u003cb\u003eno blame was attributed\u003c\/b\u003e, stating that the circumstances did \u003cb\u003enot amount to culpable negligence\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe is buried at \u003cb\u003eOued Zarga War Cemetery, Tunisia (Grave 1.H.1)\u003c\/b\u003e. This cemetery lies close to the front line reached by Allied forces during the winter fighting in Tunisia following the \u003cb\u003eAllied landings in North Africa in November 1942 (Operation Torch)\u003c\/b\u003e and the subsequent advance eastwards against German and Italian forces.
