His records show that he was born on \u003cb\u003e7 June 1916\u003c\/b\u003e, later dying in the \u003cb\u003eColchester\u003c\/b\u003e registration district in \u003cb\u003eDecember 1989\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e73\u003c\/b\u003e. On attestation he gave his full name as \u003cb\u003eArthur Gerald Haywood\u003c\/b\u003e, and stated that he was born at \u003cb\u003eAldershot, Hampshire\u003c\/b\u003e. He enlisted at \u003cb\u003eHornsey\u003c\/b\u003e on \u003cb\u003e26 April 1939\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e22\u003c\/b\u003e, for service with the \u003cb\u003eTerritorial Army\u003c\/b\u003e, being taken into the \u003cb\u003eMiddlesex Regiment\u003c\/b\u003e, specifically the \u003cb\u003e7th Battalion\u003c\/b\u003e. At that time he was a \u003cb\u003ePost Office\u003c\/b\u003e employee, was recorded as \u003cb\u003esingle\u003c\/b\u003e, and was described as \u003cb\u003e5 ft 6½ in\u003c\/b\u003e tall, weighing \u003cb\u003e153 lbs\u003c\/b\u003e, with \u003cb\u003efresh complexion\u003c\/b\u003e, \u003cb\u003egrey eyes\u003c\/b\u003e, and \u003cb\u003ebrown hair\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHis pre-war Territorial service is clearly shown in the papers. He was serving with the \u003cb\u003e7th Middlesex Regiment\u003c\/b\u003e in \u003cb\u003e1939\u003c\/b\u003e, attended \u003cb\u003eannual training\u003c\/b\u003e, and was then \u003cb\u003eposted to 2\/7 Middlesex Regiment\u003c\/b\u003e on \u003cb\u003e30 May 1939\u003c\/b\u003e. When the war began he was \u003cb\u003ecalled up for service\u003c\/b\u003e and formally \u003cb\u003eembodied on 1 September 1939\u003c\/b\u003e. During this early period he also attended the \u003cb\u003eArmy School of Cookery (London Area)\u003c\/b\u003e from \u003cb\u003e22 November 1939 to 6 January 1940\u003c\/b\u003e, where he qualified in \u003cb\u003e1st class\u003c\/b\u003e. This is a nice little extra detail from the file and suggests he was trained for specialist duties connected with army catering.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHis statement of service shows that after long home service he went overseas in \u003cb\u003eMay 1943\u003c\/b\u003e, serving first in \u003cb\u003eNorth Africa\u003c\/b\u003e from \u003cb\u003e16 May 1943\u003c\/b\u003e and then in \u003cb\u003eSicily\u003c\/b\u003e from \u003cb\u003e6 August 1943\u003c\/b\u003e, though the casualty material makes clear that he had already been involved in the \u003cb\u003eSicily campaign\u003c\/b\u003e before that latter administrative entry. The wartime casualty lists record \u003cb\u003ePrivate A. G. Haywood, 6206683, 2\/7th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment\u003c\/b\u003e as \u003cb\u003ewounded\u003c\/b\u003e in the \u003cb\u003eMiddle East–Sicily\u003c\/b\u003e theatre. The original entry in \u003cb\u003eCasualty List No. 1226\u003c\/b\u003e did not state the date, but a later correction in \u003cb\u003eCasualty List No. 1231\u003c\/b\u003e confirms that the \u003cb\u003edate of casualty should read 20 July 1943\u003c\/b\u003e. His own military history sheet also records him plainly as \u003cb\u003e“Wounded in action, 20.7.43.”\u003c\/b\u003e That gives the file real substance, as it ties him directly to active operations in Sicily with the 2\/7th Middlesex.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAt some stage after his wound he was transferred away from the Middlesex Regiment. His service papers show a transfer to the \u003cb\u003eRoyal Army Pay Corps\u003c\/b\u003e, with the later documents and medal records all identifying him as \u003cb\u003eCorporal, R.A.P.C.\u003c\/b\u003e A post-war medal card and separate long-service record both confirm him under the same service number as a \u003cb\u003eCorporal\u003c\/b\u003e in the \u003cb\u003eRoyal Army Pay Corps\u003c\/b\u003e. He was eventually \u003cb\u003ereleased to Class “Z” (T) Royal Army Reserve on 12 February 1946\u003c\/b\u003e, classed as a \u003cb\u003eClass A release\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHaywood’s medal entitlement is well documented. His medal application form, completed as \u003cb\u003eMr A. G. Haywood\u003c\/b\u003e of \u003cb\u003e“Glendale,” Rayleigh Road, Hutton, Essex\u003c\/b\u003e, confirms entitlement to the \u003cb\u003e1939–45 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, and War Medal 1939–45\u003c\/b\u003e. The file also records the \u003cb\u003eEfficiency Medal (Territorial)\u003c\/b\u003e, and a separate index entry confirms \u003cb\u003eA. G. Haywood\u003c\/b\u003e, \u003cb\u003eCorporal\u003c\/b\u003e, \u003cb\u003e6206683\u003c\/b\u003e, \u003cb\u003eRoyal Army Pay Corps\u003c\/b\u003e, under authority \u003cb\u003eA.O. 48\/46\u003c\/b\u003e, which fits with his long Territorial and wartime service.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHis personal details are unusually full. He married \u003cb\u003eDorothy Grace Ellis\u003c\/b\u003e, a \u003cb\u003eBritish spinster\u003c\/b\u003e, on \u003cb\u003e14 October 1939\u003c\/b\u003e at the \u003cb\u003eParish Church, Great Burstead, Essex\u003c\/b\u003e. Later entries give his wife as \u003cb\u003eMrs D. G. Haywood\u003c\/b\u003e, with an address at \u003cb\u003e2\/3 Brook Cottages, Little Burstead, Billericay, Essex\u003c\/b\u003e.
